Real Madrid showed strong character by defeating Marseille 2-1 in their League Phase matchday 1 of the 2025/2026 UEFA Champions League at Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday (17/9/2025) early morning WIB.
The hosts were shocked by Timothy Weah’s opener, but Kylian Mbappe equalized from the spot, and the score stayed level until halftime.
In the second half, Madrid went down to 10 men after Dani Carvajal was shown a red card. Despite this, Los Blancos managed to turn things around through Mbappe’s second penalty.
First Half
Madrid played with high intensity from the start. Franco Mastantuono nearly scored with a powerful shot that hit the post after beating Rulli.
Their attacking approach left gaps in midfield, which Marseille exploited. Greenwood delivered a perfect pass to Weah, who finished into Courtois’ top right corner.
The goal silenced the Bernabeu, but Madrid responded quickly. Rodrygo was fouled by Kondogbia in the box, and the referee pointed to the spot.
Mbappe calmly stepped up and sent Rulli the wrong way to make it 1-1 before the break.
Second Half
After the restart, Madrid continued to pressure Marseille. Mbappe almost scored again, but his shot deflected and hit the crossbar.
Tension rose when Carvajal clashed with Marseille goalkeeper Rulli. After a VAR review, the referee showed Carvajal a straight red card.
Despite being down to 10 men, Madrid kept fighting and won another penalty after the ball struck Medina’s hand in the box.
Mbappe once again took responsibility and coolly sent Rulli the wrong way, securing a 2-1 win for Madrid.
