Former Minister of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology, Nadiem Makarim, issued a statement after being named a suspect in the alleged corruption case involving the procurement of Chromebook laptops at the ministry.

Wearing a pink detainee vest, Nadiem firmly denied any wrongdoing. “I did nothing. The truth will prevail. Integrity and honesty have always been my principles, and God will protect me, InshaAllah,” Nadiem said on Thursday (Sept 4, 2025).

The Attorney General’s Office announced that Nadiem would be held at Salemba Detention Center, South Jakarta, for 20 days during the investigation process. “Suspect NAM will undergo detention starting September 4, 2025, at Salemba Prison, branch of the South Jakarta District Attorney’s Office,” said Nurcahyo Jungkung Madyo, Director of Investigations at Jampidsus.

According to Nurcahyo, the case began in early 2020 when Nadiem, then serving as Minister, held a series of meetings with Google Indonesia. The discussions centered on adopting Chromebook devices under the Google for Education program, which later became part of the ministry’s ICT procurement project.

Nadiem allegedly instructed ministry officials in a closed-door meeting to ensure the use of Chromebooks, even though previous trials in 2019 had failed. Following this, officials prepared technical guidelines specifically aligned with Chrome OS specifications.
