A 6.5 magnitude earthquake shook Nabire, Central Papua, in the early hours of Friday (September 19, 2025). According to BMKG’s analysis, the quake was classified as a shallow earthquake.

BMKG’s Head of Earthquake and Tsunami Center, Daryono, reported that the quake occurred at 01:19 WIB with a magnitude of 6.5. The epicenter was recorded at 3.47° S and 135.49° E, located inland Nabire at a depth of 24 km.

“Based on the epicenter and depth, this was a shallow earthquake caused by the activity of the Weyland thrust fault. Source mechanism analysis indicated a thrust fault movement,” said Daryono.

The quake was strongly felt in Nabire at intensity V MMI, waking many residents. In Wasior, tremors reached intensity IV–V MMI, while Enarotali recorded III–IV MMI. Meanwhile, Timika experienced intensity III MMI, and Biak-Supiori at II–III MMI.

BMKG confirmed the earthquake had no tsunami potential. However, as of 01:47 WIB, four aftershocks were recorded, with the largest at magnitude 4.2.
