
Magnitude 6.5 Earthquake Jolts Nabire, Central Papua, No Tsunami Threat
Jakarta – A magnitude 6.5 tectonic earthquake struck Nabire, Central Papua, on Friday (Sept. 19) at 01:19 a.m. local time. The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) confirmed there is no tsunami potential.
The quake’s epicenter was inland at coordinates 3.47°S and 135.49°E with a depth of 24 km. BMKG reported the tremor was triggered by the Weyland thrust fault.
Strong shaking reached intensity level V MMI in Nabire, waking nearly all residents. Wasior experienced IV–V MMI, Enarotali III–IV MMI, Timika III MMI, and Biak and Supiori II–III MMI.
By 01:47 a.m., BMKG recorded four aftershocks, the largest at magnitude 4.2. Authorities urged residents to remain calm, avoid unreliable information, and check their homes for cracks or structural damage following the quake.
