Students from the University of Indonesia (UI) voiced strong criticism toward the Indonesian Parliament (DPR) for increasing lawmakers’ allowances while citizens continue to face economic difficulties.

During a meeting with DPR leaders at the Abdul Muis Room, Parliament Complex, on Wednesday (Sept 3, 2025), UI student representative Agus Setiawan questioned the lawmakers’ celebratory dancing after news of the allowance hike surfaced.

“At a time when people are losing jobs, purchasing power is falling, and the economy is sluggish, news of rising allowances deeply hurts us, especially when it is marked by symbolic dancing,” Agus stated.

He added that DPR often remembers the people only during elections but tends to neglect promises once in power. Agus also warned that Indonesia’s 2045 Golden Vision could fail if leaders ignore the people’s mandate.

The meeting was attended by Deputy Speakers Sufmi Dasco Ahmad (Gerindra), Cucun Ahmad Syamsurijal (PKB), and Saan Mustopa (NasDem), along with representatives of BEM SI and other student organizations.
