An earthquake struck Gunungkidul and surrounding areas in the Special Region of Yogyakarta on Sunday afternoon January 25 2026. The magnitude 4.6 quake was felt by residents in several locations but caused no reported damage or casualties.

According to the Meteorology Climatology and Geophysics Agency, the earthquake occurred at 3.51 PM local time. The epicenter was located offshore about 106 kilometers southwest of Gunungkidul at a depth of 10 kilometers, classifying it as a shallow earthquake triggered by an active offshore fault.

Residents reported feeling the tremors more than once, with the first shaking described as stronger than the subsequent one. Light to moderate shaking was felt across Gunungkidul Bantul Yogyakarta City and Pacitan.

Gunungkidul Disaster Management Agency confirmed that no damage reports had been received so far. Authorities continue to monitor the situation to ensure public safety.

BMKG confirmed that the earthquake did not pose any tsunami risk. The intensity ranged between II and III on the MMI scale, indicating that the tremor was noticeable but harmless.

A smaller aftershock was recorded less than an hour later, although it was not widely felt. Authorities advised residents to remain calm and rely only on official information sources.
