MORE than 100 humanitarian organizations warned on Wednesday (July 23) that mass famine is now sweeping the Gaza Strip. Even aid workers are experiencing the severe food crisis firsthand.
Israel faces mounting international pressure over the worsening humanitarian situation in the Palestinian territory. More than two million Gaza residents have endured 21 months of devastating conflict, with acute shortages of food and basic needs.
Although Israel eased its aid blockade since late May, conditions remain dire. Many civilians have died trying to obtain limited humanitarian aid.
In a joint statement, 111 organizations including Doctors Without Borders (MSF), Save the Children, and Oxfam declared:
“Our colleagues and the communities we serve are slowly dying. Aid workers are forced to queue for food, risking their lives as they can be shot just to feed their families.”
They urged for an immediate ceasefire, the opening of all land crossings, and unhindered aid delivery through UN mechanisms.
Casualties Rising While Seeking Aid
The UN reported that over 1,000 Palestinians have died trying to access food aid since late May.
Hope and Despair
Warehouses filled with tons of aid remain untouched due to blocked access.
“Palestinians are trapped in a cycle of hope and despair... Life expectancy feels like a mirage,” the statement said.
Humanitarian Crisis Out of Control
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called the situation in Gaza “an unprecedented horror.”
Casualties continue to rise: 59,106 Palestinians have died since October 2023. In just the last three days, 21 children died from starvation.
Humanitarian groups are demanding real action from global governments:
“Half-hearted deals and symbolic gestures merely mask indifference.”
