As Indonesia celebrates its 80th Independence Day, the National Police (Polri), in collaboration with the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) and intelligence units, are jointly ensuring security across Jakarta. National Traffic Police Chief, Inspector General Agus Suryonugroho, stated that all available forces are deployed—including Headquarters, Metro Jaya Regional Police, all Polri units, TNI (Astamaops, Pangdam), as well as local authorities such as Satpol PP and the Transportation Agency—after the Merdeka Jaya Operation Roll Call at Senayan on Saturday (August 16, 2025).
Polri’s intelligence division is specifically tasked with early detection of potential threats. “We’re deploying intelligence functions to anticipate any issues,” Agus emphasized in his address.
The Merdeka Jaya Operation, spanning August 16–18, 2025, involves 9,065 personnel from multiple agencies. Officers are strategically stationed at key crowd convergence areas like the National Monument (Monas) and the Presidential Palace. Authorities estimate over 400,000 attendees at the celebration. Consequently, policing efforts focus on mitigating risks such as traffic congestion, crowding, mass gathering pressures, and any security disruptions.
“Potential vulnerabilities include traffic jams, overcrowding, crowd accumulation, and related security risks,” Agus concluded.
