After years of speculation and eager anticipation from tactical RPG fans, Square Enix has officially announced the release of the Final Fantasy Tactics Remaster, set to arrive on PC via Steam. Unveiled during the latest PlayStation State of Play, this marks the first time the beloved strategy RPG will be playable on PC.
Titled Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles, this edition features two versions of the game. One is a modern remaster with fully voiced dialogue, upgraded visuals, a revamped UI, and various quality-of-life improvements including an easier “Squire” mode for newcomers. The other is a faithful version of the 1997 classic, enhanced slightly with features like autosave.
The game centers on Ramza Beoulve, a young noble caught in the Lion War, a brutal conflict between warring factions. Fans of Final Fantasy XIV may recognize him from the Stormblood raid series “Return to Ivalice.” The narrative is full of political intrigue, betrayal, and moral complexity, set in the rich world of Ivalice, shared with FF12 and Vagrant Story.
Combat revolves around an intricate job system, allowing players to customize units with versatile skills that carry across different roles. Players can even recruit both humans and enemy monsters into their party. If you're familiar with Fire Emblem or XCOM, you’ll feel right at home.
Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles launches on Tuesday, September 30, exclusively for PC on Steam. For fans of tactical gameplay and layered storytelling, this long-awaited return to Ivalice is a must-play.
