Indonesia’s Environment Minister Hanif Faisol Nurofiq is set to inspect the massive floods in Bali on Friday, September 12, 2025, to evaluate the disaster’s root causes. The floods struck from Tuesday night to Wednesday morning.
“Tomorrow morning I will visit Bali to review the situation and have already coordinated with the Governor,” Hanif said after the Waste Sorting Cadre inauguration in North Jakarta on Thursday, September 11, 2025.

Hanif highlighted Denpasar as a key concern, suggesting clogged drainage during heavy rainfall as an initial trigger. He noted that Bali’s provincial and local governments are addressing waste management, but clearing long-accumulated and new waste will take time.

He urged local authorities to safeguard slopes, rice fields, and water catchment areas, warning against converting land into hotels, cafés, or other tourist facilities. “Disrupting the natural landscape invites events like this as nature recalibrates,” he stressed.

A Ministry of Environment team is already on the ground to investigate contributing factors, including waste issues and land-use changes, in addition to extreme weather. The floods and landslides have affected 120 locations and claimed 16 lives, mostly in Denpasar, with others in Jembrana, Gianyar, and Badung.
