Only three Indonesian representatives have made it to the French Open 2025 quarterfinals: men’s singles player Alwi Farhan and men’s doubles pairs Fajar Alfian/Muhammad Shohibul Fikri and Sabar Karyaman Gutama/Moh Reza Pahlevi Isfahani.
Seven others were eliminated in the Round of 16 of the BWF Super 750 tournament held on Thursday, October 23, 2025.
Alwi stands as Indonesia’s sole survivor in the men’s singles category. The 20-year-old secured his place in the last eight after a thrilling three-game battle against Ireland’s Nhat Nguyen at Glaz Arena, France.
After losing the first game, Alwi came back strong to win 16-21, 21-12, 21-17 in 1 hour and 37 minutes, leveling their head-to-head record to 1-1 after previously losing to Nguyen at the Thailand Masters 2025.
Feeling relieved, Alwi shared that he managed to overcome his on-court struggles by adapting his tactics quickly.
“I was able to control my mindset on the court. When my opponent began catching up, I changed my game plan and regained control,” Alwi told the PBSI media team.
Meanwhile, two senior players fell short. Jonatan Christie, fresh off his victories at the Korea Open 2025 and Denmark Open 2025, was defeated by Japan’s Koki Watanabe in three games, 21-11, 19-21, 23-25, after 1 hour and 20 minutes. It was Jonatan’s first loss to Watanabe in their three career meetings.
Anthony Sinisuka Ginting also failed to progress after losing to Chi Yu Jen of Taiwan. Despite a promising start, Ginting could not maintain his momentum and lost 21-14, 23-25, 15-21 in 1 hour and 19 minutes.
In men’s doubles, the seeded pair Fajar/Fikri cruised into the quarterfinals after defeating Denmark’s Daniel Lundgaard/Mads Vestergaard in straight sets, 21-14, 21-16, marking their second win over the same opponents after the Denmark Open last week.
The unseeded pair Sabar/Reza also advanced after beating fellow Indonesians Muhammad Rian Ardianto/Rahmat Hidayat with a quick 21-12, 21-13 victory in just 30 minutes.
In mixed doubles, Jafar Hidayatullah/Felisha Alberta Nathaniel Pasaribu bowed out to third seeds Dechapol Puavaranukroh/Supissara Paewsampran of Thailand, 19-21, 17-21.
Felisha reflected positively:
“Even though we lost, we felt more confident today. We’re gradually working toward regaining our best form from a few months ago,” she said.
Lastly, all three women’s doubles pairs — Febriana Dwipuji Kusuma/Meilysa Trias Puspitasari, Rachel Allessya Rose/Febi Setianingrum, and Lanny Tria Mayasari/Amallia Cahaya Pratiwi — were eliminated in the Round of 16.
