An earthquake swarm struck the Sukabumi-Bogor region of West Java on Saturday (September 20, 2025). According to BMKG, while the tremors were relatively small, frequent shocks could worsen existing structural damage.
The first quake occurred at 11:47 PM local time with a magnitude of 4.0, centered 26 kilometers northeast of Sukabumi Regency at a depth of 7 km. Since then, 38 aftershocks ranging from M 1.9–M 3.8 have been recorded until Sunday afternoon.
Shaking was felt in Klapanunggal, Dramaga, Palabuhanratu, and several areas in Sukabumi and Bogor. The tremors were measured at intensity II MMI, noticeable by some residents and causing hanging objects to sway.
BPBD Sukabumi reported five houses sustained light damage in Kabandungan District, each sheltering 4–5 people. Authorities urged residents to check their buildings for safety.
Head of the Geological Agency, Muhammad Wafid, advised people to avoid slopes or cliffs prone to landslides, especially during rainfall.
Similar events have occurred before. In December 2023, more than 55 swarm quakes hit Pamijahan (Bogor) and Kabandungan (Sukabumi), with the largest at magnitude 4.6, damaging dozens of homes. Back in 2019, the same region was struck by 670 swarm quakes, with the strongest reaching magnitude 5.0.
BMKG’s Head of Earthquake and Tsunami Center, Daryono, explained that earthquake swarms are typically small in scale but occur with high frequency. While large quakes are rare, repeated shocks can worsen structural damage.
